On board internet is very slow and therefore expensive.], as you pay per minute. use internet shops on shore, the staff d, they are much cheaper!!
More and more ships are well equiped with laptops but they don't normally allow you to take them away from the areas where they have them set up mainly as the offer courses on various aspects of their use. They will also want to control what you might download onto their units is an other worry. It is best ot take your own with the wi-fi now set up on the majority of ships you can use them anywhere, but it is not cheap most ships offer what is known as bundles and it is worthwhile looking at these offers to help keep your costs down. On several ships I worked out you could be paying for normal usage no special options around $50/80 per hour just to surf the net. If you intend to use it to keep in touch via email then you can control those costs, but you will have to investigate further once you join the ship and get registered to use their system. I found in some ports the wi-fi was strong and you could use the laptop sitting out on your balcony as there was no protection on access !!
I was thinking of just being able to email home and check my inbox.
You can either use the on board computer facilities or take your own laptop with wifi capabilities to keep in touch. If you use the internet sparingly it will not cost you a fortune, but don't forget that this service is there to make money for the cruise line, and as all services are via a satellite link, they are not cheap! You will be able to "pay as you go" or buy a package, as you wish. The choice will be yours! Happy cruising.
