Strictly speaking a liner is a ship that follows the same pattern of voyage eg Southampton / New York /Southampton. There were many liners carrying passengers all over the world which followed firm itineries. Many of their passengers were working overseas and thos was the sole means of getting to their place of employment. A cruise ship carries passengers on vacation and will normally call at a series of different ports throughout the world according to the cruising season. Hope this helps.
