No, it is not always the case but if you look at the scenario....3000 odd passengers to be transported to the ship, not all of whom are going to be able to be taken by the shortest and most convenient method, so invariably other airlines are asked for assistance and not all of them will have direct links from, say, Britain to Italy so they have to use airports in their own country as the link which will involve a longer trip in miles and time. ... Hi, we are booked with Celebrity, who are part of the RCI 'family'. We too had 'two leg' flights (to Venice and returning from Barcelona) and were told by Celebrity that the contracts they have (from Manchester)are with airlines that follow these routes; however if you can fly from the London airports their contract there is with BA and are direct flights. They changed us to Gatwick with no problems and it was also cheaper! We were lucky as we had booked direct with Celebrity. Good luck.
No they do not 'always', but it depends on which airport you want to fly out of. There are naturally more direct flights from the London airports but if you insist upon flying from Bristol or Cardiff or Newcastle, then the chances are there will not be a direct flight and you will change planes somewhere in Europe. RCI rarely use low cost carriers which is the reason for this. Also if you have booked last minute there is a chance that the direct routes are sold out. Yet another reason to always book your flight yourself so you pick what route you want to go, and what time you want to fly.
We are flying out of Manchester..and booked 8 months ago.
What ship and cruise date are you on? - we're on VoS on the 18th Oct (see above).
We booked a fly/cruise through RCI for voyager of the Seas (18/10 sailing from Barcelona)in January and are flying direct from Manchester to Barcelona on a scheduled Monarch flight (touch wood!). Only one flight per day so as previously mentioned it tends to be first come, first served.
I have just been on a RC cruise around the med. We had to have a connecting flight. Manchester to Munich then to Barcelona. The same coming back. Munich airport very clean. Free tea, coffee and newspapers. We had to wait 1 hour 15 mins for our connecting flight. We also cruised with RC last year. When invoice arrived we had connecting flights but a couple of months before we were due to go our travel agent phoned to say thay RC had changed the flights to direct. You could arrange your own flights alot of people I spoke to on our cruise had done that.
We have never used RC flights as, as you mention, they seem to offer non direct flights. However, although we always book our own we never take chances and always fly out the day before just in case of problems, dont want to be chasing the ship around if we miss it.
